Over the past few days, my inbox has been flooded with questions about coconut oil. Last week, in USA Today, an article came out stating that coconut oil was no longer healthy for you.  As many of you know, I am a huge advocate of consuming healthy fats like coconut oil, avocados and olives every single day.  I wanted to dissect this whole coconut conundrum for you today to lessen the confusion that is out there right now.

As you may have guessed, I’m definitely not buying news that was put out in last weeks USA Today.

Did they actually have any new evidence?
They actually had no new evidence or research that gives them reason to recommend to the public to quit eating healthy fats for heart health.  All the evidence points to grains, sugars and bad fats (like vegetable oil) that are causing heart disease and obesity at alarming rates in our country.  Healthy saturated fats like coconut oil have not been shown to cause heart disease.

Brain Health
Healthy saturated fat isn’t just good for your heart and cardiovascular system, it is extremely healthy for your brain as well.  You see, the brain is made up of more than 70% fat.  If you want your brain working efficiently from childhood to your golden years, you have to feed it properly.  If you feed it grains and vegetable oils like the USA Today article recommended, you will certainly degrade brain function along with the rest of your body.

Vegetable oils???
It is completely mind-blowing to me that they recommended using vegetable oil over coconut oil.  We know the omega-6 fats in vegetable oil are extremely dangerous to almost every function of our body.  This is because they are highly INFLAMMATORY.  If you have been following me for any amount of time, I always recommend staying away from vegetable oils at all costs.

To sum it all up:
Myself & my family will keep cooking with coconut oil and consuming it every single day.  I believe it is a Powerful SuperFood!  Other benefits of coconut oil include increased cognitive functioning, its antimicrobial affects, antiviral affects, and can also help promote a healthy thyroid.  Because it is Anti-Inflammatory, it helps so many other functions of the body as well.

Other Healthy Fats
Coconut oil is not the only healthy fat to consume.  Try to consume these healthy fats daily or weekly too:

  • Grass fed butter
  • Avocado
  • Olives and Olive oil
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Salmon
  • Grass fed meats
  • Egg yolks
